Random Ramblings... Hopefully They Make Some Sort of Sense

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Wow... It's July!

I can't believe we are more than half way through the year already. Time really does fly, doesn't it?

Sadly, not much interesting has happened in the time since I last blogged. I'm really not very interesting when it comes right down to it I suppose. I think in a lot of ways that is probably a good thing though.

I do have one bit of interesting news though... I have returned home! As Chris likes to say, in eight years I've managed to move across the hall. (Seriously.. I now sleep in the room across the hall from my old bedroom.) Chris got a different job with the same company that required he move down here, and so barely six months after our last move, we packed up yet again, and moved down to Coral Springs. We are actually renting the second half of my parent's duplex. It has worked out quite nicely, especially since despite the higher cost of living, we are actually paying a little bit less in rent/utilities.

I know you might be thinking that living that close to your parents must suck, but actually it is pretty awesome.. At least in my opinion. Then again, my parents aren't the type to barge in unannounced or bug me about anything. I probably bother them way more then they bother me, especially when I'm over there stealing food because I'm too lazy to go grocery shopping. ;-) Besides that, they are rarely home anyways since they keep pretty busy. It has actually been rather nice being so close to them again.

Believe it or not though, I actually miss Tampa a lot more then I thought I would! Mostly I miss the friends that I made up there, especially since all my old friends down here have moved away! I am not the type to make friends very quickly, so right now Chris and my family are all the people that I have to hang out with right now. I rather liked Tampa as a whole though too. It doesn't rain EVERY SINGLE DAY up there! The drivers aren't quite as ridiculous either. It probably wouldn't take too much to convince me to move back to Tampa, especially since the cost of living is a little less!

Just in case you were wondering, while Chris' job changed, mine did not. I'm still grooming dogs... I just transferred stores. I now work in Boca Raton and have decided that "Boca people" are not from this world. They are crazy. Luckily for me though I generally enjoy working with most of the people at my new store.

Besides that, like I already said, not much has changed. I could probably tell you a hundred "crazy Titus" stories to fill up space, but it's getting late, and I really only just wanted to make a quick post. (You know.. just in case someone has actually been checking in since March :-P)

Until next time... (Whenever that may be...)

And Now We Present...

2008

Although, 2008 isn't exactly new anymore since it's practically March, but if I told you once, I've told you at least a couple of times, that I can not be trusted to blog regularly. ;-)

And go figure... There have been some interesting changes since the last time that I blogged. For one, my ringworm finally went away (even if the chip on my shoulder still visits from time to time.) Also.. I got another cat. His name is Titus and he's insane. I never would've thought I'd have an orange tabby... Always thought that they were kind of ugly, but Titus opened my eyes to the world of orange tabbies. :-)

Ooooh.. I also raised a baby squirrel for like six weeks back in August. I named her Rosi. It was a tough job.. I had to feed her every few hours around the clock! It was worth it though and very rewarding. Originally I had even planned on keeping her as a pet (as it is legal in the state of Florida) but as I got to know her I came to the conclusion that she'd be happier with a chance to live free in the trees, and contacted a rehabber with the experience to get her ready to be released back out into the wild.

IMG_4572
That's her a day or two before I took her to the rehabber.

That's the majority of the new and exciting things that I haven't reported to my adoring fans out there. ;-) (I hope you could hear the sarcasm!)

I'm still grooming (although at a brand new store), still struggling with school (although I took this semester off as I didn't have the money to pay for it and don't receive any financial aid anymore,) and still get annoyed at every little thing.

Oh... Chris and I did move into a new apartment though... It's awesome. Here's a crappy little video tour...

Well.. Guess that's about it for now. Maybe I'll post about a new pet peeve or something later ;-)

All For Nothing

According to sources such as the Texas Childrens' Hospital, The University of Michigan Pediatric Advisor, and The Children's Hospital of St Louis I'm spent the last eight days home for virtually NO reason.

There are more sites that say the same thing, but I'm too lazy to list more than that because there are LOTS!

Let me sum it up for those of you that care though...

They all seem to agree that the incubation period (the time before it symptoms become apparent) for ringworm is typically between 10 and 14 days.

They all also agree that ringworm isn't contagious after 48 hours of treatment.

Let me repeat that...

Ringworm is NOT contagious after 2 days of treatment.

Which means I went through hell and took almost all of my sick time for NO reason. (For almost three weeks I was under constant treatment, topically for two weeks and orally for one, before I took all my sick time.)
At least now I can go back to work on Monday with a clear conscience and a little bit of ammunition if needed.

Oh, and just in case you don't believe me look for yourself... Just google ringworm "not contagious"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not really that upset that I wasted all my sick time since I probably would've never used it anyways, but I'm sure as hell not going to worry about taking anymore now.

Fungus Among Us

Namely, me.

For those few who don't know I've been trying to get rid of ringworm on my arms for going on a month now. (Ringworm is caused by a fungus, NOT a worm, and I most likely got it from a dog at work)

After the prescription cream made it worse, the doc prescribed oral antibiotics in case it was infected and an oral antifungal, Diflucan. I have to take the Diflucan once a week for four weeks. I just took my second one this past Sunday, so I still have like 2.5 weeks to go.

Thankfully, the Diflucan actually seems to be doing the trick. The areas on my arms affected by the ringworm are still discolored, but not raised or oozing any more and not nearly as pissed off looking. I wish I had pictures of my arms at their worst because even the nearly blind would be able to see a difference :-P

Anyways, this experience with ringworm has probably been one of the worst experiences of my life! I never even knew I could be so itchy! I also never suspected other's around me would turn retarded because of ringworm on my arms! It's ringworm, not leprosy! (Yeah, I know leprosy isn't really that contagious, but that's not that point) The point is that despite what some people seem to think, I was pretty careful to greatly minimize the risk of anyone else getting ringworm from me after I found out exactly what it was. Yes it's contagious, but its not as if it can go fucking airborn like the flu. To flip out on me because you had your hand in the trash and accidentally touched the vetwrap that held the gauze on my arm is pretty ridiculous. To think that a glove I used to try to keep my arm dry might give you ringworm is even more ridiculous since the damn glove never even remotely came in contact with the fungus since it was ALWAYS covered when I using the gloves. That was the whole point of the gloves... To keep what was covering the ringworm affected area dry!

*sigh*

So yeah, this hasn't been the worst experience of my life just because of the fungus itself. It's been the worst experience of my life because it taught me a lesson I didn't want to learn. A lesson about what people are really like. Funny how something so stupid as ringworm can show you who really gives a damn about you.

Lesson Learned.

Ooh La La!

There is no doubt about it! I want this woman's hair and her style in general! I love her post modern, messy shag hair do and her vintage looking tomboyish clothing and I think I might put some of my financial aid money towards a hair cut and an updated wardrobe this semester. Its been ages and ages since I really bought myself any clothes in complete outfit form! Oddly enough I'm even kind of excited about going clothes shopping... Now if only I could put some effort into getting a body remotely like hers too! :-)

Dog Grooming vs. Human Grooming

Just a list of pros and cons that I've been considering when I think about going to groom school at the end of this month and beauty school in the future...

Dog Grooming Pros:

  • Dogs are cuter and often sweeter than people!
  • Well trained dogs are a pleasure to groom!
  • I don't really have to worry about developing any kind of relationship with canine clients.
  • I can say anything I want in front of the dogs.. They don't care.
  • I don't have to worry about how I look for the clients... Again, the dogs don't care.
  • People aren't usually as picky about their dog's haircut as they are their own.
Human Grooming Pros:
  • I don't usually have to worry about people biting me.
  • I don't have to check human clients' shot records.
  • Human clients are much less likely to poop all over the place for me to clean up.
  • People are likely to pay more for their own haircut then they are for their dog's haircut.
  • Expressing human anal glands is not a service I'd ever have to offer.
  • I know plenty of people who would let me practice on them.
  • People are more likely to listen when you tell them to sit still or give them any direction for that matter.
  • The chances of me cutting a human client are much less than the chances of me cutting a dog client.
Either way the good news is that ultimately I don't really have to choose between the two. There is no rule that a hairdresser can't groom dogs in her spare time or vice versa :-P The other good news is that as long as I live a decently populated, remotely trendy area I can be gauranteed that there will people who need their dogs groomed and their own haircut too.

What might be even more fun is if you combined a beauty salon and a grooming salon in one... That way the pet and the owner could get their hair done at the same time :) There are people out there who would love that idea!

Waiting!

I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for season two of my newest favorite series to download and its taking forever!

Also... Waiting and being teased while waiting just makes it worse!

I keep looking over and sometimes it will be down to like just 30 more minutes, but then of course two minutes lates its back up to 2 days. *sigh*

I hate waiting.

I'm Back (Again)

No... I haven't been in hiding... Just busy with a tendency to forget I have a blog :-)

I remembered today though... Although it helped that I'm kind bored since I don't have work or school today and I'm stuck waiting for at least another couple of hours for the next season of my current obsession to finish downloading.

I do have some great news though... I'm going to grooming school at the end of this month! :-) They haven't officially decided at which salon they are going to hold the academy yet and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its not at my salon though. There really just isn't enough room in our salon anymore to fit another 6 people! Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I also have some sad news... My rat Katy had to have surgery to remove a large mammary tumor early last month. She's all healed up and doing okay now, but sadly the mass is coming back :( I don't think it would be fair to put her through another surgery, so I really don't know what to do now. I guess I need to take her back to the vet and talk about what my options are now. Rats really are hard on the heart to love.

I guess the only other news that I have to report is that I've also decided to teac myself how to crochet this winter break. It is kind of fun and keeps my hands busy. So far I've only done a bunch of swatches to practice my stitces, but I think my first project is going to be an afgan. I have to find some nice yarn and enough of it first though :-P

Anyways... I guess that's it for this update... Hopefully I'll be back before this month is up ;-)

What the...? Get out of here!

What the...? Get out of here!
I wasn't going to upload this shot (due to egregious badness, overexposure, et cetera), but it cracked me up every time I looked at it, so I thought I'd share the hilarity.

I was trying to get a picture of my rats flattened abjectly on the floor of their cage, suffering in the heat, but the minute the camera appeared, THIS happened. Damn rats.

(Also, see here, for a shot of Rat B's lazy squashed face.)

Friendship

"A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."

"It's the friends you can call up at 4am that matter."
- Marlene Dietrick

"The most I can do for my friend is simply to be his friend. I have no wealth to bestow on him. If he knows that I am happy in loving him, he will want no other reward. Is not friendship divine in this?"
- Henry David Thoreau

"We are all angels with only one wing...we can fly only embracing each other."

"If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I wouldn't jump with them, I'd be at the bottom to catch them"

"A true friend is someone you can trust with all your secrets."

"Friends are like pillars on your porch. Sometimes they hold you up and sometimes they lean on you."

"A friend is someone who reaches for your hand, but touches your heart."
- Kathleen Grove

.........................

In light of some recent events I have been thinking about what friendship means to me.

Friendship is trust, integrity, kindness, caring, genorosity, blunt honesty, and fierce loyalty. Its is a precious gift though, and should be handled with care.

I'm thankful to have such awesome friends of my own. I suspect that whatever I have to go through it will be possible with them by my side, and I have no reason to doubt that they will stay by my side.

Remembering Kami

Today, for the first time in a while I thought of my Kami. Not many people know about Kami. Sadly, I don't even have any pictures to prove her existance. She did exist tough and I remember her!

Kami was a hairless baby rat. She was a black self with the cutest little bit of fuzz on her face. She was my baby for just over two days, but I was in love with her within moments.

You see... Kami came from a pet store where she wasn't well taken care of and when I saw her she was already starting to have balance issues. I tried taking care of her as best I could, but after about 30 hours in which she only got more and more sick, I knew she had to be taken to a vet. She couldn't eat, couldn't walk... She was congested, had trouble breathing, and had gotten bedding in her eye so that she couldn't close it, and even flushing it out with saline solution didn't help. She couldn't eat on her own because she couldn't balance herself to keep a grasp on the food... She just kept rolling in circles. It broke my heart, and when she finally got to the vet, the prognosis was not good. The vet said that it looked like she had head trauma. I'm not so sure that vet knew what the hell he was talking about! What is more likely is that it was an upper respiratory that turned into a major inner ear infection. Since the vet was taken care of through the pet store where she came from, I wasn't even told when they made the decision to put her to sleep.

Thinking of Kami makes me sad... And it makes me think of failure. Ultimately I do feel that I failed her... I should've brought her home sooner (I didn't because I knew I'd have a fight on my hands with Chris)... I should've taken her to a vet on my own (I didn't because I was broke, as sad an excuse that is)... I wish things had been different. But I am at least grateful that she got to be in a home where she was loved and taken care of (to the best of my ability) even though it was for so short a time. I am also happy to know that she really is in a better place where no one can hurt her again, and I sincerely hope that I will get to see her again one day.

Wow... that actually brought back a lot of tears and too few memories. I like to think that Kami was an angel who was brought into my life for a reason... And while I may not know what that reason is, my sick little Kami made a big difference in my life! I will always remember her!
